CURIOUS ABOUT OUR NAME?
Portolanos or portolan charts were the first coherent navigational maps created, starting from the 13th century AD onwards. This collection of knowledge, this business intelligence so you will, became well known for its cartographic value and accuracy.
The maps, composed out of locally sourced smaller knowledge assets and based on the craftsmanship and insight of local sailors were so valuable that they were treated as state secrets for much of the 13th and 14th century.
Key in the creation of these charts was the bottom up sourcing of navigational collective intelligence, captured by navigational experts in the field and bundled by the usage of unifying methodologies.
